Why Reach the University?

Reaching the university gives us the opportunity to impact our worlds’ most influential minds of our day; The social, scientific, and spiritual theories of today's campuses will become the accepted norm for tomorrow's grade schools, businesses and television programs. What the U.S. is and what it will become is directly related to what happens on its university campuses. As a nation's campuses go, so goes the future of the nation.

Reaching the university gives us the opportunity to impact the 700,000 international students that study in the United States; We can reach people on campus we might never reach through traditional missions. These students will be in positions of leadership in their home countries when then return home after graduation.

Reaching the university gives us the opportunity to be disciples:  A Christian community on campus is uniquely gifted as a place to share the vision, call, and skills of disciple-making. We equip students to be sent out all over the country and the world.

Reaching the university gives the church the opportunity to connect with individuals who would not otherwise encounter a Biblical message of Jesus Christ. The staggering populations of many of our universities and colleges include large numbers of pre-Christians and should compel the church to see it as a mission field.

Reaching the university gives us the opportunity to protect the investment that the Church has made in our youth: Christian youth are walking away from church at a staggering rate. The church must respond with real solutions. Chi Alpha has a proven track record helping Christian students from a variety of backgrounds rediscover and remain strong in their faith during college

What is a CMIT?

CMIT stands for Campus Missionary in Training.  A CMIT is an individual who feels a call to campus missions or vocational ministry of some kind and commits a year or more to an internship experience in order to receive training and equipping to test and approve this call. Since an internship is full time commitment, it requires participants to raise missionary support.
An internship will equip a CMIT in five areas:

  • Character development and spiritual maturity
  • Practical ministry and leadership experience
  • Educational development in theology, exegesis, and ministry issues
  • Training and experience in communication on multiple levels
  • The first level of Ministerial Credential with the Assemblies of God

You should consider completing an internship if you feel God speaking to you about giving back to university missions or if you are considering missions as a career, no matter your age, stage of life, or previous ministry experience.
